1:08 pm - Traditionally
Tradition is a poor substitution for reason, and reason is a poor substitution for passion.

2:44 pm - introspectiveness
Hope is the difference between feeling like you are waiting for life to begin and waiting for death to come. Of course, on the outside, these things look the same.

We are allowed the pursuit of happiness, but not always the means to pursue it.

3:57 am - Writer's Block: Cheese doodle?
When you doodle, what shapes, patterns, and/or creatures do you find yourself drawing? What do you think it says about you?

2:13 am - Delish Delice
I took a long, healthy walk today then promptly hit the cheese counter at Plum Market. I picked up a small wedge of Delice Du Jura at random because I didn't want to linger and have an awkward interaction with cheese counter attendant who, of course, is trained to jump on you like an eager, knowledgable puppy if you look at the cheese for more than 10 seconds lol

If I had waited I would have subjected both myself and the cheeses'...um handler? to a fruitless line of questioning.

How many ppl are you serving, do you plan to serve it with a wine, do you like sharp cheeses, soft cheeses, do you want it for cooking? snacking? um...other?

Seriously, most of the time the answer is simply: I want a cheese I haven't tried before in a small enough, affordable enough chunk that I won't care much if I don't like it.

At any rate, Delice Du Jura was delish... similar to brie but even more earthy...not quite as distinct as cambozola. The most interesting thing is that it is almost runny even at refridgerator temperature.

3:33 am - To Those Who are Repugnant Enough to Inspire
Heroes and role models are too hard to find...sometimes all you need is someone you find repulsive enough to inspire you to be nothing like them.

3:19 am - with my sincerest hope
At this stage in life I have learned just enough to tell you what not to do; it is my sincerest hope that the next leg of life will help me with the rest.

5:22 am - Bricks
With the spirit extinguished,
These bricks are nothing but obligations,
Stacked up like so many valuable, unwanted things.
We should be so lucky as to watch them burn.

Before any of you go thinking you're a bit dense, you should know I waved at a blind girl last week. Perhaps, I'll go read to deaf children tomorrow.

6:15 pm - Christmas in July...Halloween in January
With my personal style of procrastination it's amazing I didn't get this picture up for next Halloween. At any rate the pictures I took of myself in make-up on Halloween night came out very dark so I did a little witch a la Warhol with them

and this is mary with almond boneless chicken...just as it should be:)

8:26 pm - Happy Very Belated Halloween
I can't believe I allowed Halloween to pass without at least some acknowledgment via livejournal. Here's a little rundown of my Halloween:

1) The week before Brendan and I did fun fall stuff. Apple orchard, scary movie, getting stuck in a ditch ( turning in front-ways I might add) etc.

2) On Halloween day I taught at Dakota H.S. where I got to make lame jokes like "Too bad no one dressed up" when I saw people in psycho ward jumpsuits and anime schoolgirl dresses.

3) Ratted out my hair and put ghoul make-up on to pass out candy to kids who didn't put even that much effort in :P (pictures will follow eventually)

4) Ate the mandatory pumpkin custard

5) and the piece de resistance: Got to go eat dinner at Dragon Phoenix (while still in ghoul make-up, of course) with Mary whom the pumpkin gods saw fit to send home very briefly. Seeing an old friend is one of the few things that make Halloween almost feel like Halloween again...a jubilant celebration of all things juvenile and nougat filled.

10:24 pm - you know you're going to try this...
So, I'm probably on a last to know basis with this, but has anyone undertaken the "Saltine Challenge?"

The deal is you have to eat 6 salted variety Saltine crackers in 60 seconds or less which is supposed to be ever so difficult. I conveniently remembered this bit of urban legend while having a little family dinner at my grandmother's house which included carry-out soup and the prerequisite mountain of Saltine cracker packets. Long story short this ended with me spewing Saltine cracker shrapnel across the lacey table cloth and my little Polish grandma giving me the "I survived the nazi invasion for this?" look. Yes, that's a look specific to little Eastern European grandmas and the shorter the grandma the more severe the look. My grandma is maybe 4' 10" on a good day.

It occurs to be on occasion as though I have thought it for the first time, that getting somewhere would be easier if I happened to take a first step. So...shoes on, foot out and...hey, what's so shiny in that other direction?

12:00 pm - Happy Halloween
As a public service I have decided to list my 13 favorite horror movies so no one gets stuck watching movies like Signs or Dreamcatcher (these are bad movies people, don't kid yourselves and if you do think they're good please wear a tinfoil hat so we know who you are).

In no particular order...

1) Suspiria (best foreign horror complete with one of the most cringe worthy yet nearly plausible deaths...think razor wire)

2) Room 1408 (newest classic...Stephen King is baaaaaack)

3) Madhouse (This is the madhouse of 2004, not the 1974 which I can't vouche for)

4) May (Best Frankenstein spin), and Dark Hours (two of the best recent, female lead, horror movies that didn't get much, if any, publicity).

5) The Hole, and Dark Corners (Both with Thora Birch, aka the little girl from Hocus Pocus)

6) Cabin Fever (Give it a chance and take it in as a whole. Unexpectedly and intentionally funny)

7) Identity (vacant hotel, killer on the loose, John Cusack 'nuff said)

8) Frailty (Religious fanatics and Matthew McConaughey)

9) The Shining (Who doesn't like this?)

10) House of a 100 Corpses, Devil's Rejects (I actually like the sequel, devil's rejects more, but I think it's a better experience to see them both)

11) Rosemary's baby (another classic. Good if you want something slow and not gory)

12) Ghost Ship (unique look/ imagery and spooky feel)

13) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 version) and the original Nightmare on Elmstreet (For best gratuitious slicing, dicing and mangling and because I just can't forget Freddy).

The Runners ups:
House On Haunted Hill (one of the better haunted house stories with a cool look)

Silent Hill (cool imagery and sounds...if plot and actually liking the characters isn't important to you then I highly recommend)

13 Ghosts (I really dug this movie but I know enough people who don't to put it at the bottom of my list)

White Noise and Mothman Prophecies (Both start out good but lose their way, but decent if you want something that is more creepy than gory)
